Health and safety level 3 online course - yellow safety helmet on workplace desk

4 Workplace Health & Safety New Year’s Resolutions

There are just six short weeks till Christmas (somehow), so now’s the perfect time to think about what you want to achieve, both personally and professionally, in 2026.

Now, while we might not be able to help too much with the more typical new year’s resolutions like quitting smoking, getting more exercise or spending more time with friends and family, what we can assist with is career progression for people in the health and safety sector!

So, if you’re keen to develop professionally and really push yourself in your job over the next 12 months, here are just four resolutions to consider making that will help you do just that. Enjoy!

1. Upskill at every opportunity

We always say you should say yes to every opportunity that arises – but don’t forget that you can also create opportunities for yourself.

Career-wise, one of the best ways to progress and climb the corporate ladder is to upskill, upskill, upskill… and if it’s continuous improvement courses you’re looking for, we’ve got a bucket load to choose from.

What about our Health and Safety Level 3 online course, for starters? This is essential for anyone in a supervisory or management role in any sector, or anyone running their own business.

It covers everything from risk assessments to implementing control measures… and it’s a great one to add to your CV.

2. Always wear the correct PPE

We know how easy it can be to adopt a ‘this will do’ attitude when it comes to personal protective equipment (PPE).

Yes, it can be a little annoying to have to devote a bit of time to finding the right gear for the job before you even get started but it’s definitely in your best interests to do so – not to mention being a legal requirement!

So if you know you’ve been somewhat slapdash about using PPE, for your safety and those around you, prioritise this as your new year’s resolution until it becomes a firmly engrained habit.

3. Don’t forget about your mental health

It’s really common for people to only think about physical health and wellbeing when considering health and safety… but don’t forget about your mental health and emotions, as well.

An excellent new year’s resolution (and one that will benefit you both at work and at home) is to always talk through how you’re feeling, whether that’s with a counsellor, a close friend or your line manager.

A problem shared is a problem halved – and you’ll feel significantly better if you do talk it all out.

4. Enjoy it!

It can be difficult working in health and safety, but it can also be very rewarding.

Yes, it might be tricky if injury rates are high and you’re worried about your workforce, but try to take a step back and look at the bigger picture, as your highs are sure to be greater than your lows… and the difficult circumstances are where the learning happens.

So make sure you take the time to appreciate your accomplishments and all the hard work you’ve done.
